Liam is working on his homework. I'm looking over the spelling words he has for this week.
Apparently the teacher pre-tests them with a list of 15 words and the first 5 that they miss are their words for the week.
Well, my super duper speller has gotten some pretty tough words the last few weeks, that were towards the bottom of the list.
So today I notice that he missed NIGHT and CRIED, which were towards the top of the list.
Liam: Yeah, I thought CRIED was spelled C-R-Y-E-D. I didn't know about the Y.
Me: Yeah, that's a tricky one.
Me: But, Liam, you've known how to spell NIGHT since you were like three. How did you spell that one? [I'm still somewhat miffed that the "inventive spelling" they've taught him at school has basically taken his spelling back a few notches.]
Liam: Weeelllll.... N-I-T-E. [giggle snicker]
Me, teasing: You silly goose.
Liam: Whaaaat!? [smiling] I didn't want to get more "hard words."
Me, flabbergasted: You mean you spelled it wrong on purpose!?
Liam: Yeah.... Like I said, I didn't want to get any more "hard words." ....Am I in trouble?
Me, unable to hold back laughter: I'll have to think about it. [I don't really blame him. One of the words he got is ABDOMEN which I to this day have trouble spelling. And the one he didn't get because he "misspelled" NIGHT is METAMORPHOSIS (which I just looked at his list to know how to spell here.) Geesh!]
Me: Daddy and I expect you to do your personal best. If you know how to spell a word correctly I think you should do just that.
