It's not about the Running (or the Walking)

Today I sat through what seems like the millionth therapy evaluation for Owen.  These are never any fun.  The whole process just serves as a reminder of how your child falls short of the "norm", how he's different, or behind or not measuring up.  It brings to light all the areas of struggle.  Who of us would enjoy that!

After a morning like this I always have to remind myself how my God sees my son.  Perfectly and wonderfully made [Psalm 139:13-18] and desperately in need of a savior [Rom 3:23].    I know we're in the middle of this Team Owen money raising thing—something we've never done before—and I realize that some of the message may be misunderstood by some.

You see, even if the doctor who predicted before Owen's birth that he would "Never walk, never be normal" was right, God would still see my boy in the same way.  He is God and He does not make mistakes.  He desperately loves Owen (and you), so much that He sent His only and perfect Son to die in our place [John 3:16]!  The only thing we CAN'T do in God's eyes is save ourselves from our sin.  There's only love.

So here's what this shirt I designed for Team Owen means to me...  It's not bragging that Owen can run (which technically, he doesn't.)  It's not even celebrating that he can walk despite that doctor's predictions.  Though that's pretty cool.  It's not really about that stuff at all.  To me, this little story about a bee and Doctor Owl is all about NOT allowing others define who you are or what you can become!  I do not have to fit in a mold others have chosen for me, and neither do you!  Our God has bigger plans for us than that—we can become instruments to bring him glory!  [John 9]  And here's a little secret... He especially likes to do so through our weaknesses [2 Cor 12:10].

I pray that Owen (and you, and I) remember how God sees us—as his dearly loved children, created and loved before the foundations of the world. He wants nothing more than for us to realize our frailty and the depths of our sin and to turn to Him for help, accepting His free gift of salvation to all who believe [John 1:12].

My hero Mr. Rogers used to say, "I like you just the way you are, just for being you."   May these shirts bring awareness to just that.   And may we have God's eyes of love when we look at others, and ourselves.  If He can save a sinner like me, there is no limit to what God can accomplish in our hearts and in our world!  He can teach us contentment in who we are and where we're at—in the middle of an earth-shattering diagnosis and even after yet another depressing eval.  When we have Christ we can rise above our circumstances and find contentment in Who we are in Christ [Phil 3:10-19].

Thankful He's not finished with me yet!

monstermommy

When you realize you've turned into monstermommy and have to ask your kids for forgiveness, then go cry a little and pray a lot and start the day over and it's only 9:00?  Yeah, it's that kind of day.  Thankful for the God of second chances and new beginnings this morning.  He makes all things new and today I need a new heart—His.

Resurrection Diorama

We just finished putting together our Resurrection diorama with the kids.

They are excited to see the grass grow.

Probably more excited to get a turn to water it with a spray bottle.

I am hoping it will be great visual of the amazing resurrection of our Lord!

Here are the links to to my posts about it last year:

Bible Time Jr.

The other day after version 1.0 and 2.0 and I finished our morning Bible time,  Liam offered to read a Bible story to the younger set for me.

So sweet.

Rescue Mission

Last night we toured the FW Rescue Mission

with some folks from our church.

we took Liam and Kate with us

great opportunity for a "field trip."

we almost didn't make it

car issues.

yes

again.

we were 45 minutes late

but we got there.

you see

we really had to make it

Kate had something she wanted to do.

all through the tour she clutched her little cloth bag with pandas on it.

Let me back up...

that morning during our Bible time

we we were reading in 2 Corinthians 8

about the Macedonian churches

who (v2) "out of the most sever trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity."

had a great chance to talk about generosity,

joy,

what it means to be poor,

and sacrificial giving.

that the point of giving is not so much about the

amount we give,

as it is about why and how we give.

Then (totally unplanned) one of our school lessons later that morning

was about giving.

how giving to the poor is like

giving to Jesus himself.

sacrificial.

like Mary and the perfume she poured on Christ's feet

I commented to the kids how incredibly timely our conversations today had been

since we were going to the Rescue Mission that evening.

how God is amazing like that.

I explained more about what the Rescue Mission was and what we would learn there.

it humbles me to see their little eyes  grow wide

as I tell them about the poor and homeless in our own city.

these opportunities I love about homeschooling.

Late in the afternoon

Kate came to me.

"Mom, I'd like to give some of my money and maybe some toys to the Rescue Mission.  Is that okay?"

melt my heart.

"I think that's a wonderful idea.  You gather them up so we don't forget."

So last night

after we FINALLY arrived

Kate listened quietly as Pastor Donovan

and his staff shared their hearts for the mission

and lead us through the halls

of the shelter for women and children.

after we wrapped up our tour in prayer

Kate so bravely approached Pastor Donovan,

a tall, black man with much presence,

"I have something for the Rescue Mission."

she held up her little bag.

"My my! That is very generous!  You know, I think that makes you a donor!   I guess I need to get you a receipt!"  he said with a smile.

everyone laughed

Kate beamed.

we all followed to the front desk as he chatted with Kate, still carrying her little cloth panda bag.

"Do you have a job?" he joked.

"No.  Well, I do have chores."  feeling more at ease now.

"Would you like to receive our quarterly newsletter by email or mail?"

Kate shot me a confused glance.

We counted the contents of her little bag on the front desk.

one dollar bill

a 5 dollar bill (given to her by Miss Pat for her birthday.... in July.)

2 dimes

3 nickels

a penny

and a small plastic panda bear.

$6.36 and a panda toy.

I'm pretty sure that's most of her money.

and one of her favorite toys.

Pastor Donovan thought out loud, "Now I think one meal costs about $1.50. So this should cover 4 meals."

Kate's eyes were huge.

Pastor Donovan filled out her receipt

and handed it to her.

so kind.

Our friend Melissa

who works at the Mission

leaned down and told Kate

her gift was beautiful.

all $6.36 and a plastic toy worth.

A staff member introduced her to

a little boy with his mom

in the next room.

so Kate was able to hand him the toy panda herself.

beautiful.

yes.

"She will always remember this."

Melissa said to me.

I hope so.

I will.

What a lesson.

As we walked down the front steps

I asked Kate, "Can you believe so little can do so much?!  4 meals!"

"I know!" she said breathless, "I was so shocked.  I wanted to shout real loud, 'WOW!' when he told me that, but I didn't."

I love this girl.

on ultrasounds

I realized something about myself recently.

When I hear about a young couple

giddy with anticipation

of their first ultrasound.

excited to find out

if they're having a boy

or a girl.

or in a recent friends' case

twins!

No matter whether it's their first child

or their 4th.

I cringe inside.

this surprises me.

I get a twinge.

and I find myself immediately praying.

"Lord, please hold them."

Between my own ultrasound experiences

and my dear friend Kristin's

I guess I've come to associate a sense of

foreboding.

reverence even.

like the veil has been lifted

and I see these highly anticipated

technologically amazing

(yet not future predicting)

sneak peeks into the womb

as the life changing events they truly are.

Yes, no matter what the ultrasound reveals—

a perfectly healthy girl or boy

or something unexpected—

it changes your life forever.

Ultrasounds are special

defining moments.

TREASURED.

remembered.

not trivial.

nor routine.

Each of mine were this.

EACH of them.

So when I hear of another

my breath catches

and I smile wide

and I say "How exciting!"

and I pray "Father, please hold them."

and I wait, heart stopped

for the news.

Maybe it comes with age

maybe experience

maybe coming through the fire carried

each time.

Yet there it is.

I've changed.

on the way home

On our way home

from Riley today

as Owen slept

in his

car seat

Thinking of all

that lies ahead

feeling a bit

overwhelmed.

I can't do this.

Thinking of all

that we've come through.

This week.

These 6 years.

overwhelmed

with gratitude.

6 years of found joy.

Seeing so clearly that

God has

NEVER

left my side.

Then this song came on

the radio.

Wow.

My heart exactly.

Crazy when that happens....

check it out.

Need You Now
by Plumb

Well, everybody's got a story to tell
And everybody's got a wound to be healed
I want to believe there's beauty here
So, I guess you're tired of holding on
I can't let go, I can't move on
I want to believe there's meaning here

Chorus:
How many times have you heard me cry out
"God please take this"?
How many times have you given me strength to
Just keep breathing?
Oh I need you
God, I need you now.

Standing on a road I didn't plan
Wondering how I got to where I am
I'm trying to hear that still small voice
I'm trying to hear above the noise

Chorus

Though I walk, though I walk through the shadows
And I, I am so afraid
Please stay, please stay right beside me
With every single step I take

How many times have you heard me cry out?
And how many times have you given me strength?

Chorus

I need you now
I need you now

What a story to tell

Evie (18 mo), Zane (3), Owen (5), Trent (9), Annalise (1 day), Liam (8), Drew (7), Kate (6)

Trent, this day: Boy, just imagine if Noah, Joanna and Emilie were here!  That would be a big bunch of kids!

Yep.

Forever in our hearts.

____

Never Once
by Matt Redman

Standing on this mountaintop
Looking just how far we've come
Knowing that for every step
You were with us

Kneeling on this battle ground
Seeing just how much You've done
Knowing every victory
Is Your power in us

Scars and struggles on the way
But with joy our hearts can say
Yes, our hearts can say

Never once did we ever walk alone
Never once did You leave us on our own
You are faithful, God, You are faithful

Never once did we ever walk alone
Never once did You leave us on our own
You are faithful, God, You are faithful
You are faithful, God, You are faithful

Scars and struggles on the way
But with joy our hearts can say
Never once did we ever walk alone
Carried by Your constant grace
Held within Your perfect peace
Never once, no, we never walk alone

Never once did we ever walk alone
Never once did You leave us on our own
You are faithful, God, You are faithful

Every step we are breathing in Your grace
Evermore we'll be breathing out Your praise
You are faithful, God, You are faithful
You are faithful, God, You are faithful

Awana

The kids love Awana!

I love that they are hiding God's word in their hearts.

Here are some pics from awards night.

Yes, Zane had his hands in his pants for most of his time on stage.

Good Friday

Today at lunch we talked about Good Friday.

Went through the devotional from our Heart Felt Truths Banner.

Put the nails in the cross on the banner,

The wrapped "body" in the tomb,

and covered the whole thing with the black panal

as we read the story from the Bible.

(Sorry I didn't take any pictures.)

One of the main points the kids are learning this week is that

"Jesus came to die"

Even Zane is getting it a little.

____

Then we put a little piece of Kleenex in our Resurrection Garden tomb and  moved the stone in place.

On Easter morning they will wake up to a surprise!

____

Finally, we did something I saw on a great blog.

We talked about crucifixion.

The nails in his hands.

That it was our sin that He was being punished for.

Jesus did nothing wrong.

(this is really being hammered home as we've been reading Amon's Adventures the last few weeks)

We read in the Bible that the people mocked Jesus as he was on the cross

and told him to come down if He really was God.

We talked about how He really could come down if he wanted to because he was so powerful...

But He didn't.

BECAUSE HE LOVED US SO MUCH.

Then I drew red circles on their palms and wrote their name

as I reminded them...

that Jesus died for Kate because he loved Kate.

Jesus died for Owen because He loved Owen.

Jesus died for Zane because He loved Zane.

Jesus died for Liam because He loved Liam.

I did my hand too.  And we'll do Daddy's when he gets home.

Here's a completely washed out (b/c I had the camera on the wrong setting) video.

Throughout the day it has been powerful for ME to see it on my hand and remember Jesus' sacrifice for ME.

I'll ask them what it means and they say "Jesus died for me!"  or "Jesus loves _____."

It has been cool.

Resurrection Day

I saw this idea posted on facebook by Jen Edward's sister, Laurie.

I thought it looked like a great idea.

A decoration with meaning.

A teaching tool.

I researched it a little bit and there are some great ideas out there...

Like putting a toy wrapped in cloth in the tomb on Good Friday
and covering the tomb.

Then on Resurrection Day have only the cloth left and the stone rolled away.
Some people even decorated the hill with flowers.

Eric and I thought it was worth doing.
We're always looking for meaningful traditions for holidays and ways to help our kids grasp God's truth.

So Eric bought us a planter base and grass seed Saturday.
Then the kids and I created our own tomb scene the other day.

We'll see if the grass grows or not.
You're supposed to buy shade seed and spritz it with water every day.

We'll keep you posted!

___

We also got this.

I thought about making it myself then got realistic and bought it on Etsy.
(although I did get the one where you make the symbols yourself cause it's cheaper.)
Working on that today.
Really excited about it.

You'll have to just go check out the link.  I don't see a need to re-explain it here.

But it's really cool.

Question.

(oops, here's the video.)

What am I living for?  The red line or Eternity?

Christmas

Christmas... remember that holiday I never blogged about?

.....

Now that it's March I thought I'd remedy that.

Here is what our tree looked like:

...our taller and pre-lit tree!

Yay for 2010 end of year clearance!

___

And here is our Jesse Tree!

Two years ago we did a paper version
that I blogged about here.

This year we made a wooden version
which will hopefully be a part of our celebration of Christ's birth for years to come.

We got the wood from our friends the Romines' back yard!
(Thanks, Romies!)

Eric cut all the disks from a branch and I painted them.

We read a devotional each day of Advent with the kids
and then hung up the corresponding disk.

In case you've never heard of the Jesse Tree...

It is a daily devotional and scripture reading for each day of Advent
that walks you from Creation to the birth of Christ.

By Christmas you have covered all the major events/characters of the Old Testament (and some in the New) that God used to pave the way for our Savior.

It is really neat.

and especially cool to see that just by looking at the symbols on the disks, the kids could recount each story.

Jesse Tree

I'm so excited about the wooden Jesse Tree Eric made this year for our family! (Thanks, Romines, for the wood!)  Eric does a devotion with the kids each morning.  We printed a booklet we found online and read from Liam's NIrV Bible.  It traces through the Old Testament with each story pointing to Christ's coming.  We love how the kids are really getting into it.  They love to hold the ornaments during the story and take turns hanging them on the tree.  Hopefully we'll have this tree and this tradition for years to come.  (not sure where I'm gonna store it though!)

Pain

"To know that our Father in heaven has ordained our pain is not a comfortable truth, but it is comforting. That our pain has a loving and wise and all-powerful purpose behind it is better than any other view—weak God, cruel God, bumbling God, no God. To know that in his hands “this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison” (2 Corinthians 4:17) is profoundly reassuring. And yes, “light” and “momentary” meant, in Paul’s case, a lifetime of suffering. The excruciating “lightness” of his suffering was light compared to the weight of glory. And the interminable “momentariness” of his suffering was momentary compared to the eternality of the glory."
John Piper, A Sweet and Bitter Providence, pp. 138-139.

Just keep swimming...

Sometimes it feels like an endless line of making sandwiches, wiping noses, changing diapers, reading books, laundry, therapy...

and I start to tell myself:
"Just keep swimming...
just keep swimming"

- Dory, Finding Nemo

But it's really more than just doing the next thing. (Although that's what it takes sometimes.)

There is a purpose behind it all.

Raising my 5 kids in God's ways is my life's calling. And even though it's hard work. It's worth doing.

It is JOY.

This is on my fridge:
"And let us not be weary in well doing; for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." - Galations 6:9

a good reminder. when I'm tired.

and incredible when you reach the end of yourself and know it is God's strength holding you up.

very cool.

I Lift My Hands

I lift my hands to believe again
You are my refuge, You are my strength
As I pour out my heart, these things I remember
You are faithful, God, forever
