It's not about the Running (or the Walking)

Today I sat through what seems like the millionth therapy evaluation for Owen.  These are never any fun.  The whole process just serves as a reminder of how your child falls short of the "norm", how he's different, or behind or not measuring up.  It brings to light all the areas of struggle.  Who of us would enjoy that!

After a morning like this I always have to remind myself how my God sees my son.  Perfectly and wonderfully made [Psalm 139:13-18] and desperately in need of a savior [Rom 3:23].    I know we're in the middle of this Team Owen money raising thing—something we've never done before—and I realize that some of the message may be misunderstood by some.

You see, even if the doctor who predicted before Owen's birth that he would "Never walk, never be normal" was right, God would still see my boy in the same way.  He is God and He does not make mistakes.  He desperately loves Owen (and you), so much that He sent His only and perfect Son to die in our place [John 3:16]!  The only thing we CAN'T do in God's eyes is save ourselves from our sin.  There's only love.

So here's what this shirt I designed for Team Owen means to me...  It's not bragging that Owen can run (which technically, he doesn't.)  It's not even celebrating that he can walk despite that doctor's predictions.  Though that's pretty cool.  It's not really about that stuff at all.  To me, this little story about a bee and Doctor Owl is all about NOT allowing others define who you are or what you can become!  I do not have to fit in a mold others have chosen for me, and neither do you!  Our God has bigger plans for us than that—we can become instruments to bring him glory!  [John 9]  And here's a little secret... He especially likes to do so through our weaknesses [2 Cor 12:10].

I pray that Owen (and you, and I) remember how God sees us—as his dearly loved children, created and loved before the foundations of the world. He wants nothing more than for us to realize our frailty and the depths of our sin and to turn to Him for help, accepting His free gift of salvation to all who believe [John 1:12].

My hero Mr. Rogers used to say, "I like you just the way you are, just for being you."   May these shirts bring awareness to just that.   And may we have God's eyes of love when we look at others, and ourselves.  If He can save a sinner like me, there is no limit to what God can accomplish in our hearts and in our world!  He can teach us contentment in who we are and where we're at—in the middle of an earth-shattering diagnosis and even after yet another depressing eval.  When we have Christ we can rise above our circumstances and find contentment in Who we are in Christ [Phil 3:10-19].

Thankful He's not finished with me yet!

Fly on the Wall

If you were a fly on the wall in my house you may have heard the following:

Owen and I get home from Riley.  Owen is working on a Lego set at the table.

Eric takes the kids on a bike ride.  Evie and our Safe Families toddler E in the bike cart, Zane on the trail-a-bike and Liam and Kate riding beside.  When they get back, Zane walks into the kitchen first.

Me:  How was the bike ride?

Zane, matter of factly:  Great!  But my weenie really hurts.

Evie and Eric walk in.

Evie, announcing loudly:  Mom, Zanie's Weener hurts!

I look at Eric wandering what in the world happened.

Eric: Yes, so he told us every few minutes rather loudly.

_____

Evie LOVES to pray before meals.   She so honestly just tells God all about her day and whatever else is on her mind.  Here's a sample...

Evie:   Dear God,  Fanks mom pick up E.  Fanks Eden take care of E.  Fanks I get to pway ipad. Fanks I get to read book wiff Mom.  Fanks I have letter movie.  Fanks I get to sweep (sleep).  Fanks I go to pool.  Amen.

The funny thing is, this is an exact rundown of the events of that morning and the previous evening in reverse order.

______

Owen had a Renal Ultrasound yesterday where they use the ultrasound on his belly, sides and back to get a good look at his kidneys and bladder.

When I told him that's what was up first for the day this is what he said...

Owen:  Ooo, I love those!  They tickle.

_____

One of our friends at church gave Liam an old 10 speed bike.  Yesterday Eric taught Liam how to change speeds.

On the bike ride Liam rides past his friend's house and sees Jared outside.

Liam, shouting:  Hey, Jared.  Check it out.  10 speeds, a water bottle and a zipper pouch.

Jared, shouting back:  Can it get any cooler than that?!!  That's the bike of my dreams!

What an encouraging friend.

Not Me Monday

It was not me who whilst showering on vacation realized that the small aerosol container she thought was the mini travel shaving cream she bought for the trip was actually hairspray only after spraying and rubbing repeatedly without it lathering! No, not me!

It was not me who forgot to get someone to feed the tadpoles (did I tell you we had tadpoles?) while we were on vacation.... was relieved to see said tadpoles still alive up on return home... except one was no longer a tadpole but a tail-less frog!  It was NOT my eldest son who the next morning asked if I had released the frog into the wild because it was no longer in its cute little tank on the kitchen counter.  No, it is not me who at this very minute has a tiny, likely dehydrated and dead, frog SOMEWHERE in her house.  No, not me!

It was not me who was insane enough to run errands in the rain this morning with 6 kids because it is actually easier to wrangle a curious toddler in 3 different stores and the van because car seats and carts have straps. No, not me!

I am definitely NOT painting and rearranging the entire upstairs of my house this week all because while I was bored on the car ride home from aforementioned vacation I rearranged the whole thing in my head... you know, just for fun.  And I am certainly not attempting this feat solely during the nap times and after the bed time of a certain busy little toddler who's staying with us for 2 months through Safe Families.  No, not me!

Clever

My kids are so much more clever than I ever was as a kid.

Check this out:

Yesterday.   Liam:  Hey, mom, listen to this idea for a book.  "What is it with warts?" by Alaska Toad.

Today Liam made an empty Scotch Tape dispenser into the Scotch-ness Monster.

______

Yesterday at the park Kate made up this riddle:

I have a bed, but I do not sleep.
I run but I don't have feet.
I rage but I don't have feelings.
What am I?

Answer:  a river

______

A few weeks ago Liam and Kate watched Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 at their friends' house.  They L-O-V-E loved it!   The talked & played continually about it until it sounded like even Owen and Zane had seen it they knew so much about the movie.

Their favorite part were the "Food-imals."  Which are apparently a creature made by combining food and animals.  Foodimals.   On the movie they tell me there was a Hippotato.  A mix of a hippo and a potato.

The kids quickly became obsessed with figuring out new ways to combine food and animals.  A trip to the zoo only fueled their efforts.

I was quite impressed with what they came up with.  They even drew pictures.  [I should post those!]

Watermellaphant

Brocolemur

Moosemellon

Lice Cream

Mosquitoast

French Flies

Tacodile

Beefalo

Juice Fox

Can you guess them all?!

Mr. Observant—Where Mulch Comes From

Zane, Liam and Eric are sitting on the swing in the back yard.

[Zane loves to take random observations and form them into absolute truths, whether or not they have any basis in fact.]

Zane: Liam, did you know if you mix dirt and water it makes mulch?

Liam makes the "where the heck does this kid get this stuff from" face.

Eric:  Don't you mean dirt?

Zane: No.  Mulch.

Eric:  I think you mean MUD, buddy.  Water and dirt make mud.

Zane:  Wwweeellllll, technically... it makes mulch.  [Zane likes to use the word technically to make his ideas sound "true-er."]

Liam rolls his head back:  Here we go again.

Eric:  Zane, trust me.  If you mix dirt with water you get MUD not mulch.

Zane:  No, Dad! It makes mulch.  See... [he runs over to the new tree we planted last week and which Eric put mulch around a few days ago apparently unbeknownst to Zane.]

Zane:  ....We've been watering this dirt for days now and see.... it's turned into MULCH!

_____

Mr. Literal

We're getting our family picture taken for the church directory.  The photographer somehow squeezed and contorted all seven of us close enough together to fit in the frame.  The kids are all doing a great job of staying still and smiling...  except Owen.

The photographer works with us for several minutes trying to get him to stay in position, keep looking at the camera and smiling all at the same time.

Me: That's it, Owen!  Now stay just like that.... just freeze.... like a statue.

Owen, proudly raising his arm high in the air and completely moving every part of his body to turn and look at us: Like the Statue of Liberty?!

[exasperated sigh from the other kids]

Eric—in his calm, "no longer surprised that this is my life" voice— patiently states the obvious to our darling son instead of wringing his neck: No, Owen.  Not like the Stature of Liberty.

...and the process started over again.

_____

Miss Copy Cat—Who Needs Kneeling?

Eric is doing "Best and Worst" and prayers with the girls before bed like we do every night.  Kate and Evie share their favorite moment of the day and their worst.  Eric is laying on the floor and the girls are laying in their bunk beds.

Folding his hands across his chest, Eric closes his eyes to pray:  Dear Heavenly Father...  [He hears a commotion and opens his eyes to see Evie laying down on the floor next to him with her hands folded across her chest, eyes closed.]

Evie:  What, Daddy?  I pway wike you.

_____

Sweet Girl

Our nephew Paul stayed with us this week while his mommy went with his daddy on a business trip.  We absolutely adored having him with us for so long.  He and Evie were buddies.  And I think she really took to the "big sister" role.

Evie, no sooner than one hour after Tim and Mindy picked him up:  I miss Paulie.  I weawy miss him.

_____

Mr. Ornery

We spent Memorial Day weekend camping with my parents at Amishville (Yes, Amber.  That is a real place.)

Grandpa Rohrer wanted to put some more ice in the cooler and needed to move some cases of pop from on top of it first.

Being ornery Grandpa stacked it on Liam's lap since he was sitting nearby.

Grandpa, as he piles up Liam's lap with the heavy load:  Thanks for helping me, Liam.

Liam, grinning, cases piled up to his chin: Do I have a choice?

Grandpa, teasing: I could really use some help over here, Liam.  Could you get up and help me?  Come on, Liam, what's the problem.

Me, goading:  Yeah, Liam, why don't you get up and help him out?  What's the problem?

Liam, with a big smile, points at Grandpa:  He's the problem.

Grandma, laughing:  Isn't that the truth!

_____

Miss Social

Me, after first day camping:  Kate, what was your best today?

Kate:  Making a new friend at the playground.

Me, after the second day camping:  Kate what was your best today?

Kate: Making two new friends at the lake and one at the playground.  And... my second best was getting ice cream.

It never fails that her favorite part of any activity always involves seeing friends or meeting new people.  I was so not like this as a kid!

Fly on the Wall

Owen: How many doctors do I have?

Me: Lots.

Owen:  Like more than ten?

Me:  Probably, yes.

Owen: How many doctors does Evie have?

Me: One.

Owen: How many doctors does Liam have?

Me: Two.

Owen: How many doctors do you have?

Me: Three.

Owen, after going through each member of the family:  I win!  I have the most doctors!

Fly on the Wall

Liam & Zane are playing fusball in the Dusseau's basement during our ABF party.  Steve wanders down to check on the kids and overhears this...

Liam:  Zane, let's play fusball.

Zane: Okay.

Liam immediately sinks a goal.  (I am as surprised by this as you.)

Liam:  That's what you call experience.

Liam sinks another goal.

Liam:  That's called talent.

Zane:  I don't want to play anymore.

Liam:  That's called being a sore loser.

_____

Evie:  I want to be a great big giant when I grow up!

____

Evie went potty all by herself.

Evie:  Ma -om!  I DID it!

Me, running in:  Here I come, Evie!  Mommy to the rescue!!!

Evie:  Mom.  Stop it.  You not a supa he-wo.  You jus- a mom.

Me:  I can be a super hero if I want to!  I came to your rescue didn't I?

Evie:  No, Mom.  Only Dad can be a supa he-wo.  You jus- my mom.

____

Kate has been on a cleaning streak lately.  I must say I am enjoying it.

Kate:  Mom, I cleaned and organized and arranged my room so much there just isn't anything left to do!  I guess I'll go work on the playroom.

No, seriously... this really happened today.

____

Owen: Will I have my braces in heaven?

Me:  No!  You'll be able to walk and run without braces in heaven.

Owen:  But where will my braces be?

Me, because this is where he wants to put all things he never wants to see again:  In the trash!

Owen, tearing up:  But I'll miss them!
